Citi is seeking a highly motivated attorney to join its Legal Department as Lead Counsel on Citi’s US Retail Bank Legal Team.  The US Retail Bank Legal Team is a trusted partner, providing legal counsel and support for Citi’s US Retail Bank and is part of the larger US Personal Banking Legal Group supporting consumer and small business credit and banking products and services. 

As Lead Counsel, this is an individual contributor position responsible for serving as a subject matter expert and key legal advisor to business stakeholders and functional partners, by providing legal advice, counsel and thought leadership on all aspects of legal matters relating the US Retail Bank products and services throughout their lifecycle.   

The role will support the US Retail Business Banking product owners and will provide the attorney with numerous opportunities to learn about Citi’s Business Banking segments, work directly with bankers, and with members of others independent compliance, controls and operations functions.

The role requires the ability to work collaboratively and to have a solid conceptual/practical grounding and understanding of commercial credit transactions, deposit and cash management products and applicable U.S. banking laws and regulations. This role has authority to make independent decisions on issues and activities that have critical impact or influence on Citi overall. The role will require the attorney to develop strong relationships with clients and key contributors and to manage a diverse portfolio of legal issues.  This role does not have any direct reports.

This role and person will report to the Legal Senior Group Manager for Citi Business Banking which sits in Citi Retail Bank

Responsibilities include:

  • Delivery of legal services to Retail Business Banking and managing of day-to-day legal activities as a subject matter expert in areas of responsibility
  • Collaborate with business/functional line management in business initiatives and objectives by applying knowledge of industry, laws and regulations
  • Appropriate assessment of legal risk when business decisions are made, demonstrating consideration for the firm’s reputation and safeguarding the firm, its clients and assets by driving compliance with applicable laws, rules and regulations, and escalating issues with transparency
  • This role will also support Retail Bank Branch operations requiring counsel on data and information security.

Qualifications:

  • Commercial banking lawyer with material experience in:
    • Commercial credit products, including documentation, secured transactions, collection and enforcement remedies
    • Deposit and cash management products and associated agreements
  • Familiarity with laws and regulations impacting products and operations, including data security and cybersecurity, AML, ECOA, UDAAP, FCRA
  • Desire to pursue learning opportunities and quickly gain expertise with new products, areas of law, and regulations
  • Clear and concise written and verbal communication skills
  • Proven analytical and organizational skills
  • Confidence to work with minimal day-to-day supervision and prioritize projects to facilitate long-term business success, identify and manage urgent matters and crises
  • Ability to manage high-volume workload, and reach prompt, pragmatic decisions
  • JD required with 7-10 years of relevant financial services industry experience
  • Bar license in good standing to practice law in at least one U.S. state

Primary Location Full Time Salary Range:

$169,040.00 - $253,560.00
